Institute for Equity & Transformational Change
MADISON COLLEGE
CURRICULUM MAPPING & DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
(CMDP) OVERVIEW
A culturally responsive curriculum leverages the cultural knowledge, experiences, and learning styles of ethnically diverse students to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of learning (Ginsberg & Wlodkowski, 2009; Teele & Obidah, 2008). By teaching through students' strengths and relating course content to their cultural frames of reference within established learning partnerships, students engage in deeper, more meaningful learning and persist at higher rates (Hammond, 2014). This approach also promotes active engagement in equity, inclusion, and intercultural understanding for all students.
This program is designed to help higher education professionals assess and revise their course learning outcomes and teaching practices. The goal is to effectively integrate college-identified learning outcomes, thereby enriching both the student experience and their learning journey.
Phases of CMDP
Mapping, Learning, & Creating
Year 01
Mapping
In the first phase, you will be asked to map DEI learning outcomes currently in your curricula.
Data Use for Equity workshop
Concurrently, participating faculty will be trained to use data effectively to identify which courses need revision by participating in our Data Use for Equity workshop.
Culturally Responsive Practices & Inclusive Syllabus Design Workshops
Then, you will be asked to complete our Unlocking Excellence: Culturally Responsive Practices and Inclusive Syllabus Design workshops. These professional development opportunities will prepare faculty to incorporate these practices into their teaching.
Re-Development
Once the courses needing revision are identified, we will proceed to the redevelopment stage. This includes revising the course outline of instruction, designing inclusive syllabi, and developing or revising assignments to ensure they align with our DEI learning outcomes. By the end of this phase, we aim to have a set of courses that are more equitable, inclusive, and responsive to our students' diverse cultural backgrounds.
Implementation & Data Collection
Year 02
Implementation
In the second phase of our process, you will implement the revised curriculum developed in the first phase. This phase begins with working closely with the IETC team to identify the specific course sections where the revised curriculum will be introduced.
Tracking Table
We will complete a tracking table to monitor the progress and effectiveness of the implementation.
Practical Measure Toolkit
Faculty will develop action plans for gathering data on student experiences, ensuring that the feedback process is systematic and comprehensive. This includes eliciting and collecting data through student surveys and practical measures designed to capture the nuances of the student experience.
Gathering Data
By the end of this phase, we aim to have a robust system for collecting and analyzing data on the implementation of the revised curriculum, providing valuable insights into its impact on student engagement and learning outcomes.
Equity-Centered Evaluation
Year 03
Initial Data Analysis & Reflection
Faculty will work in groups and with IETC support to organize and, when possible, disaggregate data gathered in Phase 2. This will allow faculty to engage in equity-minded sensemaking on baseline course outcomes, the changes implemented in Phase 2, and Phase 2 data.
Equity-Centered Evaluation Principles
You will have opportunities during this phase to review and engage with evidence-based research on equity-centered evaluation principles.
Critical Reflection
Faculty will work together with IETC support to critically evaluate the impact of their current curricula. Reflection exercises will provide opportunities to compare course policies, evaluate teaching practices, course materials, and assessments through an equity lens, and solicit student and colleague feedback.
Demonstrate an Understanding of Equitable & Inclusive Practices
By the end of this experience, you will be able to demonstrate your developed comprehensive knowledge of equity and inclusion theories and principles. Utilizing the tools, education, and strategies provided throughout the CM&D program, faculty will present their findings on potential evaluation and assessment strategies to use with their current curricula, as well as identify key elements that create a welcoming and safe environment for students and colleagues.
